Chatting with Agents
Start and manage chat sessions with your agents - attachments, voice input, tools, and switching mid-conversation.
Chats are the primary way to interact with your agents. Every conversation streams responses token by token, supports file attachments and voice dictation, and can leverage the tools your agent is allowed to use.
Starting a chat
Open the Chats page
Navigate to Chats in the main sidebar.
Pick an agent
Every session begins by selecting one of your configured agents. The agent's instructions and model are applied from the very first message.
Item-aware chats
You can also start a chat directly from a Resource Item: open any item and use the Chat Sessions panel on the right. Sessions started there are linked to that item, so questions like "summarize this record" work out of the box.
Send your first message
Type into the composer and press Enter. Responses stream in as rich markdown.
Working in a conversation
- Edit & retry - Edit any of your previous messages or reload a response to explore a different answer.
- Branches - When you retry a message, prior attempts are kept as branches you can flip between at any time.
- Copy - Copy any message's content to your clipboard.
- Follow-up suggestions - After each answer, suggested next prompts help you keep the conversation moving.
- Reasoning - If your agent runs a reasoning-capable model, its thinking is displayed while the response streams.
Attaching files
Use the paperclip (or drag files onto the composer) to attach context:
| Attachment type | Notes |
|---|---|
| Images | Requires an agent with the Vision capability enabled. |
| Text files | Plain text content is included in the message for the model to read. |
Voice input
Select the microphone icon in the composer to dictate instead of typing. Speech is transcribed automatically and inserted into the composer for review before sending.
Switching agents mid-chat
You're not locked into the agent you started with. At any point during a conversation, switch to a different agent - including one backed by a different provider or model entirely. The conversation continues in the same session; only the agent handling subsequent responses changes.
Switching context
When you switch agents, the new agent's instructions take over going forward. Prior messages in the conversation remain visible as context, but behavior going forward reflects the newly selected agent.
What agents can do during a chat
Agents with the Tools capability enabled can go beyond answering questions. Depending on which tools are allowed for the agent, it can:
- Search across your Resources, documents, and knowledge sources by meaning.
- Create, update, or look up Resource Items on request.
- Generate charts and word clouds from your data, rendered inline in the chat.
- Run one of your published workflows for you.
- Schedule recurring tasks ("check this report every Monday at 9am") and manage them.
- Delegate to other agents when a specialist would do a better job.
When an agent uses a tool, the result is rendered as a friendly card in the conversation so you always see what happened.
Enable tools deliberately
Tools give agents real capabilities over your data. Configure which tools an agent may use in Settings → AI → Agents, and review the global catalog in Tools.
